All benzodiazepines have a CNS depressant effect -- and some have therefore a notable depressive effect on some people.

I believe its something that generally remains, for how long I don't know. I think if a particular one is causing problems then tapering to another one may not.

Yes, people say that Xanax has an antidepressant effect, but I think that is more the super elation that some people get -initially- which can eventually wear off. Xanax is definitely not an antidepressant in its own right.
