In reply to Can anyone please explain to me how Geodon works?, posted by SteelyDan on May 6, 2008, at 20:14:01
that Geodon is like an atypical antipsychotic with built in neurotransmitter reuptake inhibitor properties. So, its like taking an atypical dopamine antagonist and an antidepressant. I've seen some psychopharms say the reuptake inhibition is like that of Tofranil...I think the newish Tofranil, Tofranil-PM, has a website where you can go and see why its still Rx'd...it apparently has "balanced reuptake inhibition" of serotonin and (I think) norepinephrine (sp?). So in your case its like getting 2 antidepressants and an atypical antipsythcotic all in one.
I've always heard that antipsythotics were good for agitated depression, but now they're being used for all kindsa depression...maybe b/c of the serotonin antagonism of the atypicals? I dunno. Anyway, I hope it works for you.
