So it says on the Wiki article. Apparently temazepam is too. I don't think newer drugs are necessarily safer, just that more long-term side effects are known about them becuase they've been studied for longer. There have certainly been some alarming reports associated with newer dugs, such as drastic bone loss with SSRIs and the incidnce of benign brain tumours with risperidone.
