In reply to SAM-e for major depression, posted by TonyZ on February 29, 2008, at 17:33:02
About a decade ago when I was taking Prozac and feeling stable yet very blah and emotionless I added SAMe. It worked and kicked in fast. It also seemed to poopout fast, or else maybe the emotional numbing of prozac was just too much and overcame the SAMe effect. I was not brave enough to go higher than 400mg. The SAMe trial lasted about 2 weeks. I crashed for a few days after I stopped it and then returned to my former prozac baseline. I realized afterward that SAMe had in fact been helping more than I thought it had, and that the initial surge of feeling high was different from the true effect of SAMe. And thus my confusion over the supposed poopout or tolerance.
Anyway, yeah, I tried it and feel it has definite potential. But it means experimenting, pioneering, and being careful. Actually, with any drug or supplement that's the way it is. All the research in the world will not predict what will happen with you or me.
> Anyone out there use SAM-E for major depression in combination with other antidepressants. The Sam-E was working for me for about 2 years at 1200mg but recently I crashed. I've heard of some studies where it was combined with imipramine (tofranil) and other studies where it was combined with Celexa, but I'd like to hear from others that have tried and had success. I am crashing now and need some alternatives.
