In reply to antabuse and marijuana, posted by damiensmom on February 19, 2008, at 21:53:38
> Hi,
> I'm new and have searched the internet but can not find the answer. I am trying to quit drinking and have seen a doctor and am taking wellbutrin and ativan. I also belong to an online recovery group.
> my question is, can I still smoke my marijuana and take antabuse? I did read something where there was one or two cases of a psychotic episode, but I also read it would just make me more lethargic. I enjoy marijuana and have never had any problem with it, unlike the alcohol which was starting to make me sick. I also drank alcohol for 30 years and that is why I tried the antabuse, so far I am doing well. Any help appreciated. -ElaineI can't find any evidence for a psychotic reaction. There is one case report of hypomania, which resolved quickly on discontinuation of the marijuana.
Frankly, I'd be more concerned about the combination of Wellbutrin (bupropion) with Antabuse (disulfiram), as the latter is an inhibitor of the enzyme dopamine beta hydroxylase, responsible for the first step of the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine. This is a theoretical concern, rather than a proven one......as you're already combining them it's less likely to prove adverse for you.
