In reply to Tell Me More About Nardil Please, posted by bleauberry on January 20, 2008, at 11:39:07
Hi there BB,
I've taken both the original and the newer version of Nardil. The original I took a long time ago (1989) but I distinctly remember, no side effects, quick response time and a feeling of normalcy that I haven't replicated since, except for the original Marplan. It also worked at a much lower dose, 30 mg. The new Nardil has a few obvious problems with it....One is the side effects, for me specifically gas, which never gets much better. You may be interested to know the newer version contains Simethicone (In Gas-X and Maalox) so what did Pfizer do to the new formula that caused excessive gas to occur? It must be the coating change which breaks down more quickly and this change is said to be the main difference in how the med now works. It releases the medication more rapidly into the blood stream and therefore more medication is required than in the previous version.
The original Marplan too worked like a charm for me from 1991-1993 after Nardil pooped out. I think Nardil would have continued to work for me but i had a wacko pdoc who'se sole purpose in treating me was to get me off of Nardil. She was convinced that I didn't need it anymore. Everytime she lower the dose my depression returned and when I would tell her this she didn't believe it could work like that. I ended up seeing another pdoc who stated me on marplan instead.
I had no side effects and Marplan worked as well as Nardil did. Except Roche discontinued it in 1993 and that wa the beginning of the end for me. No other meds ever worked again but I tried them all.
When Marplan was rereleased in 2005, I convinced my pdoc to put me on it, but it did not work again. As I stated in another post above, I now feel one of the reasons it may not have worked was that I was also on Lamictal at the time and I had side effects from that which caused me to be worked up for MS after falling several times. Lo and behold, the Lamictal was identified as the culprit of that whole saga which included falling and memory loss.
Parnate never worked for me and i have only tried it once.
But yes the original nardil was a clean med with few side effects, nothing like today's formula and when the two formulas were compared the hard coating of the original Nardil which was red in color was replaced with a softer orange coating which is said to dissolve so quickly that many users have tried to get the orignal Nardil replicated by a compounding pharmacy without much luck, from what I read.
What is your interest in this right now, were you unfamiliar with this issue until recently?
