Countering 'SSRIs good at first, then apathy'.

Posted by rgb on January 15, 2008, at 14:57:51

Hello,

Questionmark has explained this well (thread: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20071104/msgs/793535.html ) so I won't repeat it. In short, the SSRI (sertraline in my case) helps in some areas, but I'm unmotivated and kind of dysphoric.

(btw, IMHO the late weight gain also suggests that some concrete biochemical change is going on there)

So, how to fight the apathy?

The obvious answer is a stimulant, but I think it would be hard to get one prescribed here (and they make me euphoric at first and then give me a not-so-nice comedown).

Reboxetine helps a bit initially, but not much, and makes me feel kind of bad after a few days.

Tramadol works great initially, but I don't want to risk having it stop working and then having to go through withdrawals; the mental after-effects after 2 weeks were warning enough for me.

Been thinking about:
- Dose reduction from 200mg/d to 100mg/d (risks losing the benefits)
- Adding selegiline (probably too dangerous and didn't do much for me on its own)
- Adding a DA agonist like pramipexole (Mirapex)
- Lots of other things I don't remember now ;)
- ...
