Mianserin and Mirtazapine extend lifespan

Posted by linkadge on December 12, 2007, at 22:27:58

In worms at least.

Apparently, the effects of the drugs mimic the effects of caloric restriction, through modulation of 5-ht2 receptors.

From what I understand, the drugs turn on the same genes that makes the worm think it is in a starving mode. I am assuming the worm is fed the same amount of food, even if its appetite is increased by the drug. I would also assume that this effect would be counteracted if an increased number of calories were consumed.

Anyhow, see what you can make of it.
