Not too sure myself. I would just imagine that stem cell proliferation requres a delicate ballance of inhibitory and excitory neurotransmitters. I guess being drunk all day might slow down neuronal repairation?
I tend to agree with what you are saying. The detrimental effects are likely due to excessive gabaergic neurotransmission (?)
