> I remember reading how the use of maois as ad's came about. A new drug was being tried in a TB ward in the 1950's. This was a TB drug and not an ad. It was noticed that many of the women began singing and dancing and were in a much better mood. This drug became one of the first marketed ad's. The drug later became discontinued due to sudden deaths. It was later discovered that was due to the so called cheese effect.

Iproniazid (marketed starting 1957) was actually discontinued because of its effects on the liver, according to what I have read. They were able to do that because, by that point, the other MAOis were on the market, and were considerably less damaging to the liver while maintaining the same efficacy.

Though presumably it had the 'cheese effect' as well, that phenomenon was only discovered through tranylcypromine, which is far worse than any of the others on that score.
