Among other afflictions, I have a great deal of free-floating anxiety that is punctuated by an occasional panic attack. Several years ago a pdoc cut me a script for Librium, a couple a day, forever. I turned down the volume on the free-floating anxiety a great deal (although as time marches forward I think it is becoming less effective). Off of Librium my HAMA is anywhere from 20 to 28. On it its 8 to 20.I have tried Buspar and got 4 weeks of 'electric shocks' for my trouble, so I wont be going there again anytime soon. Now, on to the question of the hour.
For my panic attacks the docs used to cut me a script for Xanax. Ok Xanax bad, people turn into junkies etc, etc. Now its all about Ativan given in sparing .5mg doses.
I have NO history of addictive behavior. I dont smoke or drink, and have never had a medication withdrawn due to abuse or even suspected abuse. My Pdoc is talking about stopping the Ativan completely, and having me take "several" of my Librium when a panic attack starts to take a hold. With its lacksidasical approach to calming panic and a halflife of 24 hours I cant see how that would be effective. Just having the Ativan around makes me feel better, a safety net.
Has anyone else been told to use Librium to treat panic attacks? Its an old antiquated drug I know, but it really did improve the quality of my life.
