Remeron, trazodone and all the atypical anti-psychotics antagonize the serotonin 2a receptor. Most other antidepressants by contrast, stimulate the serotonin 2a receptor which is believed to be one of the reasons why SSRIs can cause akathisia, anxiety, insomnia, agitation and other side effects in some individuals.

There are no herbs or supplements that antagonize the serotonin 2a receptor that I know of. If you want a neuromuscular relaxant for insomnia or generalized anxiety or tension, try calcium/magnesium supplements taken before bedtime.
