Fear of meds is a big problem, and a problem of mine, regardless of what they have done to to me in the past.
There's no one medication that may suffice at one point in time and not another especially if one is suffering from a biochemical/genetic disorder rather than if one is seeking say an antidepressant for a shorter term reaction to a traumatic period in life.
Even benzodiazepines are not innocuous but keeping them at a low dose can minimize memory issues.
Its not just medication but access to therapy is important too, which I realize that not everyone has.
The fear can create more psychological issues surrounding medication and render them less effective through unconscious paths. After all its demonstrated that 30% of people will respond to placebos so why not the opposite as well.
Appropriate choices are grounded, though, I must admit. Its a risk-benefit issue and how one wants their quality of functionality and living to take its course.
