If I understood the article correctly, it did not encourage taking several ADs at the same time. The suggestion was to try additional ADs (as monotherapy) if the first had no effect.
As for taking several antidepressants at the same time, that may also be necessary for some people who need a very small amount of med affecting a neurotransmitter which is not already "covered" by the first med. For instance, a person taking a relatively "clean" AD affecting serotonin such as celexa or lexapro might need a small boost of noradrenergic drug. The same person may not be able to tolerate the stimulating effect of the latter as a drug of first choice.
