It is essential in newborns, especially preemies. And, it really isn't an amino acid, except under generous definitions, as it has a sulfonic acid moiety in place of the standard carboxylic one. Moreover, it is not a constituent of proteins. There is no RNA coding that correlates with taurine, so it cannot be incorporated into proteins. That said, it is occasionally found in peptide-like bonds with individual amino acids in the brain (e.g. gamma-L-glutamyltaurine), which are also believed to have neuromodulatory activity.
