Bipolar Disorder and sleep

I cannot sleep. I have insomnia and take medicine to help me sleep but it isnt working. Is it possible to be in a manic phase even though you are taking lithium to control it? Im just too wired to sleep. But I have been on Lithium since tuesday of last week. I was doing well until this evening and now Im obsessing more and I cannot sleep. I want to go drive around town..but I know I shouldnt. I dont know what to do...nothing is making me fall asleep. Would this mean I am in a manic phase?
