The "XR" in Effexor XR stands for extended release. The filler of the tablet is designed so that the drug is released more slowly into your system, i.e. once-daily dosing is possible. With ordinary Effexor, you would have to take the tablets several times a day in order to maintain stable blood levels, owing to the relatively short half-life of venlafaxine. So crushing Effexor XR changes its pharmacokinetics substantially, and should not be done unless you're sure of what you're doing.
