There's actually a big difference in risk factors associated with taking the low dose pill form of selegiline vs. the patch. With the pill, so long as your remain below 10mg, the drug is purely a MAO-B inhibitor -- it only impacts the breakdown of dopamine and norepinephrine. So, if you are taking the pill at doses under 10mg, you can gingerly venture into the world of amino acids without fearing for your life.
With the patch, even though the dose amount appears similarly small (6mg), you are actually receiving an exponentially higher amount of the drug -- at at these doses, selegiline becomes a true full blow MAOI -- it impacts all 3 neurotransmitters. There are very real risks involved with taking 5-htp with the patch -- any substance that significantly increases serotonin levels has the potential to trigger serotonin syndrome. I would definitely avoid 5-htp if your on EMSAM. Tyrosine or DLPA, on the other hand, will be less risky -- they only impact dopamine and norepinephrine, so there's no potential for triggering serotonin syndrome -- there is some potential of triggering a hypertensive reaction, so it's not exactly safe, but it definitely not as dangerous as the 5-htp EMSAM combo.
If you aren't getting an adequate antidepressant response from the 6mg patch, you may want to try raising the dose -- there's a big difference between the 6 and 9mg patchs, so this may be something to consider.
Best of Luck!
