I would like to apologize for a previous
post i made regarding the effect of caffeine
on lithium (i.e. that it reduces the blood
level and therefore is not a good thing for
tremor-- just hides it). I made an assumption
which is contrary to the Madison Inst. of Medicine "Lithium and Manic Depression: A Guide", as well as the recent Lithium book "Lithium in Neuropsychiatry".In the former, and similar remarks in the latter:
"To maintain water balance--Drink ample amounts of fluids each day. If lithium is causing an increased urine output, then fluid intake must be adequate to replace *all that is lost*. For some, this can be several quarts or more. Avoid excessive amounts of coffee, tea, or soft drinks containing caffeine. Caffeine promotes water loss (and also aggravates lithium tremor)." p. 14.
Well, i stand corrected, and thought i better let you know that my doctor too, made this remark regarding diarrhea.
It just seemed to me common sense that coffee being a diuretic might decrease lithium toxicity by building up.
Sorry to be so presumptuous.
