I have a therapist and pdoc, and they happen to be friends. It works out well for me, because my T listens to me and helps me talk about my issues that are not med related, and then my pdoc reads his notes and it helps him to help me. It's pretty cool. Sometimes it can work out really well.
I wouldn't completely discount Ts, since when they are any good, they can be great. No one even tries to suggest that I don't take meds and only go to counseling. But granted, there are some horrible therapists. I've been to a few. One wasted a whole session teaching me breathing techniques that actually aggrevated my anxiety. I'm a musician, I know how to breathe! And then there's the ones who just sit there. I'm not even sure they are listening. Ugh.
