Here's a government-sponsored review of the utility of genetic testing for liver enzyme function, as it applies to SSRI antidepressants:
Testing for Cytochrome P450 Polymorphisms in
Adults With Non-Psychotic Depression Treated With
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)http://www.ahrq.gov/downloads/pub/evidence/pdf/cyp450/cyp450.pdf
I whole-heartedly support the conclusions reached.
Frome the executive summary:
"The data fail to support a clear correlation between CYP polymorphisms and SSRI levels, SSRI efficacy, or tolerability. There are no data regarding whether testing leads to improved outcomes versus not testing in the treatment of depression..."The process of employing genetic variables in drug treatment (pharmacogenomics) has tentatively begun, but it is not yet mature enough to offer any guidance, IMHO.
