The whole "abusing Xanax" thing bothers me. I realize that there's reason for doctors to be concerned if the patient has an addictive personality and tends to take the medication in larger than prescribed quantities per day... but it's a prescription drug.
If someone takes more than prescribed they run out before the next prescription. It's not like we have unlimited quantities and go out and get more without a doctor's authorization. They do have some control over this... that's why it's called a "controlled" drug.
If you have someone who's asking for Xanax, in my opinion, you have a good situation. They are seeking the help and monitoring of a professional. This is safer than someone who doesn't seek help and instead chooses to drink alcohol and or use illicit drugs excessively... many who go that route probably do have some sort of mood disorder. Doctors should be made of aware of the fact that treating someone's anxiety or depression helps to make them a healthier person overall who can make better lifestyle choices and positively contribute to and influence society.
Anxiety and depression prevalence rates keep rising... especially among college students... it's not a good thing when the youth of the country is inflicted with such detrimental disease. It's going to show up in the workforce and entire functioning of this country and our government if we aren't properly treated.
