Not when I needed it. Only lately after 25 years of this charade are they "getting" it, but they still don't get it. NO one does unless they have depression. As much as they try and help they really can't unless they've had depression.
My mother's pat answer tome was "you must have your period" any time I was depressed. Or she would ask if I used drugs that messed my brain up. She didn't want to acknowledge the defective gene is in her family. I have only begun to understand all her relatives with mental illness, several bipolar, one schizophrenic, many unipolar, diagnosed and undiagnosed.
I think my mother has manic tendencies but since she never worked she was able to stay home and torture us without being found out. I mean torture in a mentally abusive way, not physical but nevertheless still as damaging. She would call me ugly, mean, crazy...say "no wonder no one likes you", "no wonder you have no friends". How's that for motherly love and support! Don't get me going...she is still a beaut. 85 and going strong! I always said built like a brick sh**house, strong and mean as nails!
