INSOMNIA and BENZOS

Posted by halcyondaze on April 7, 2007, at 18:39:14

I'm having a paradoxical reaction to Halcion (Triazolam). It's supposed to be a short-acting benzodiazepine, which I take for insomnia, but it causes me to sleep for ten, twelve, fifteen hours at a time. I feel drowsy and literally cannot wake up the next morning. It used to work perfectly, but recently has begun causing this paradoxical reaction, which has also become life-interfering (since I have responsibilities during the day). I have been taking Ambien during the week, but I only sleep about two hours on Ambien, even when I combine it with Sonata.

My doctor and I are going to discuss other benzos for sleep. Can anyone recommend anything? My problems have to do with sleep initiation, sleep maintenance, and early morning waking, though I have the MOST difficulty with actually falling asleep. I was thinking perhaps Ativan. I want something that will help me sleep for a reasonable period of time (with a rapid onset - so something like Restoril is out) but will not cause me to stay asleep for 15 hours (so something like Dalmane is also out).

Any suggestions? I've looked through the psychiatric literature but there's (surprisingly) no head-to-head benzo comparisons for insomnia that I can find.
