Maybe his euphoria was self-induced by excitement at having done something so unexpected and radical?

Lots of things that have much less potential for abuse, have some potential, if one is adequately motivated. One reason that provigil is somewhat regulated (it's in one of the lighter categories for controlled substances) is that it's presumed to have some, lesser potential for abuse.

But since at usual doses, it doesn't provide much of a high-- although it's said to "brighten' mood, or maybe give you some small lift-- it's not considered the same type of danger that other, more intensely euphoric substances are.
