Opiates - How do they work?

Posted by mattye on March 21, 2007, at 23:45:57

How do opaites work? I remember reading that they block pain signals at the brain stem from reaching the brain. They also inhibit GABA in the nucleus accumbus, which causes heightened dopamine activity in this part of the brain.

What I don't get is that stimulants like cocaine make you wired because they increase dopamine activity. Opiates increase dopamine activity, but give you a sense of calm, serenity, and satisfaction.
