SSRIs and Effects on Body's Hormones - thoughts?

Posted by Joe Bloe on March 18, 2007, at 2:40:38

Quick Point: Did a search on Fluoxetine interaction with hormones and came across this piece which suggests that there is an interaction with thyroid hormones. I am not able to assess the validity of the research cited.

Any thoughts on this?

Longer Point: I noticed pimples on my leg just a while ago, like 5 or 6, and I never get them there. I thought it odd. It's not a rash, but regular pimples. Because I am doing a Prozac withdrawal (and am actually off it now), I became curious as to whether certain hormones might not be "kicking in" again, (the thought of some variation of puberty came to mind, also because of my increased interest in sex). I did a quick google search and came up with that site and a few others, like the study below (warning, Eli lily funded study) on thyroid and efficacy of SSRIs, a slightly different matter).

Not sure if the pimples are related or not to withdrawal, but was interested to hear thoughts on SSRI and effects on hormones or on thyroid function in general, and the possibility that certain "systems" might be jumpstarting after a few years on prozac.
