In reply to Bipolar meds and weight gain...., posted by TrishP on March 13, 2007, at 18:10:55

Hi I have Bipolar and I'm taking 100 mg of Lamictal as it has been said to help with the depression which I am more prone to than hypomania. I also take 20 mg of Lexapro (still fighting depression) 1.5 mg of Rivotril (Clonazepam/Klonopin) and 10 mg of Zyprexa.

Zyprexa made me gain 25 lbs and has caused 'blunting' where sure I am calm but have no motivation and have lost all of my creativity. So my PDOC is going to try Topamax. Google it and you will see that although it's not FDA approved for Bipolar many patients are using it with success. It is said to help with weight loss and ancedotes that I've read are very hopefull, people who had been on Depakote and Lithium, and antipsychotics that made them gain weight have lost it. I'll be hopefully starting Topamax next week and I'll be posting how it works for me. Good luck!
