"The most common hypomanic symptoms during mixed depression were irritable mood, racing thoughts, psychomotor agitation, talkativeness and distractibility. An important finding was the positive association between racing thoughts and suicide ideation."

I think it is important for doctors to test for "moodniness." You had the a euphoric fun kind of hypomania.

It was until this last summer I realized I my moodiness, periods of talkativeness, my social and general anxiety... these don't fit into what most people think of as depression. The book of labels (DSM 4) calls what most people think of as depression, melancholia.

My niece (1977-2006) shot herself. She was like me. They had her on three antidepressants... but nothing for anxiety, sleep problems, fatigue, etc. You had a good experience of hypomania. Actually, it is a good thing to have if you want to be successful... little sleep, lots of energy, sociability, confidence. But whether it is called: hypomania, mixed depression, agitated depression or bipolar 2... the up side may not feel good. On one drug, I was at my peak... I was happy, talkative, energetic.... but as soon as the conversation slowed, I'd think about suicide. It was simultaneous. That is as close to being very happy as I've ever come but it was as close to suicide as one gets, too.
