I am really distressed. No drug has ever managed to control my bipolar II disorder totally. But Mirapex did (as part of a long standing cocktail)
It’s a dopamine agonist and by its nature it should not cause weight gain.....infact people lose weight on it. But I gained almost 20 pounds in 8 months (even at a lowered does)
The weight climbs very rapidly and is uncurbed (unlike with Olanzapine wherein the weight gain did level out eventually)How is this possible- what mechanism can be involved? I know I had some hormonal problems while on it like constant physical pms symptoms. Apart from that nothing else was different and I definitely didn’t binge (infact I used to forget to eat!) It wasn't water retention either because it didnt go even after stopping the drug for 5 weeks.
I really want to figure out what could be going on because this drug is really the only hope left for me to have any sort of life...but the weight gain is ridiculous and dangerous. If I find an answer maybe I can try an antidote and a way to control it.
I wonder if the company will know since they have been other cases of this problem with Mirapex. But since it is such a rare side effect I wonder if they will have any clue . Especially since no one fully understands why it can be so effective in resistant bipolar, in the first place :-(
My doctor is clueless (as ever) and I am frantically trying to find an answer. I tried bromocriptine (a similar drug) but it was useless.
