Klonopin really isn't the best benzo for sleep. Its high-potency, so after a while you're going to lose the sedation and be left with anti-anxiety/mood-stabilizing effects. 1mg Klonopin=20mgs/valium, but 20mgs Valium makes a better sleeping pill, since it causes more drowsiness. Even xanax, which is also high potency, is better for sleep (IMO) than klonopin. The real benefit of nite-time Klonopin is that its super-long half-life can give patients anxiety relief during the day and calm down (hypo)manic patients long-term even after the sedation has worn off.
If you're in the BZD thing for insomnia long-haul, I think you should check out Restoril or maybe Dalmane..depending on where you live, Dormicum might also be an option. The non-BZD "z" hypnotics (sonata and ambien) plus Lunesta and Rozerem might also be useful.
