That's probably the primary reason, but there can be other psychological reasons, like its easier on the liver to add medications than do drown in a 6 pack or more daily. And the CNS depression will, in some individuals raise the possibility of suicide, which is exactly what medications are attempting to at least mitigate.
Now, can one reasonably stabilized on medication enjoy an occasional drink, for the sake of its enjoyment and not for the sake of "drowning sorrows", I don't personally see why not. But I guess mainly the argument is that it a) is at cross purposes and b) yes, the pharmaceutical industry has to CYA (cover your....) about their products and interaction with other substances.-- tidings
