I have exactly the same questions about Asperger's myself. When I found that dx I felt many things fall into place.
At times I can seem very normal - if I know the 'script' for that particular social scene, but ask me to do anything unfamiliar and I freeze - like stage fight - not simply through anxiety but because I just don't know what is expected of me, but I'm eager to please. It's a major problem with pdocs because I know that doctor/patient 'script' well now and feel confident so it seems there's nothing wrong with me, but you just have to see me interacting with strangers to know that isn't true. I used to bring letters of my requests and thoughts along with me to my pdoc because I had so much trouble expressing myself verbally.
Asperger's Syndrome is considered 'high functioning autism' so it is expected that you would be able to perform better than the autistic people you've known even if Asperger's is the diagnosis. There was a guy in the news here recently who had an extraordinary talent at playing the piano. He was eventually said to have high-functioning autism - Asperger's Syndrome:
