It's like another condition called NMS, Neuroleptic Malignant syndrome. If someone is given Haldol when they are taking Sinemet, a med for Parkinson's, which increases dopamine, it can trigger this condition which can be fatal.
They did this to my father when he was in the ER at Yale. He was restless and writhing from too much Sinemet (akinesisa) and they gave him Haldol which blocks dopamine.
I got to the ER after this was already done. I felt his arm and he was burning up. I asked the docs what they gave him and asked the nurse to take his temp, which was about 105.
Needless to say, after these questions, they pulled him into a private room and really started to listen to me. I told them he might have NMS since he shouldn't have gotten Haldol with Sinemet. They looked at me funny and then a lightbulb went on in their heads...
Moral of that story...anyone on dopamine agonists drugs, like Sinemet and probably many others should never be given Haldol no matter how agitated they are....NMS can be fatal if not caught in time.
Remember that was at Yale, one of the ten top psych hospitals in the country, not at Little Country Hospital.
