I have also had doctors that have been 1 hour late for appointments. Each time one of them has done any of this I immediately stop, wait for them to finish and invariably they look at me as if to say, “now where were we?” They just pick up where they think they left off and I have to stop them and politely tell them that in my corporate job I bill clients $375 an hour, that’s $6.25 a minute and that I only bill in 15 minute increments which comes to $93.75 whether a task takes me 1 minute or 15. I then tell them that I accept cash or they can credit my bill – I do not accept personal checks. This really gets their attention.
This behavior is not only unprofessional, but I think in a psychiatric setting borders on unethical (i.e. HIPPA regs. etc). DO NOT stand for this kind of treatment. If your doctor also works for a hospital that is fine, but make sure to tell her that when she is consulting with you she is not to engage in any work for any other entity – make sure she understands that you are contracting for her services and expect that for those 15 minutes she should focus solely on you.
While her distracted behavior is disturbing, the fact that she isn’t aware of what dosage she prescribes for you is downright scary! As a patient, you shouldn’t have to prove to her the dose of medication that she prescribes by bringing in your bottles. Does she take notes or write anything down in your file? This is the part that truly frightens me and if she is not documenting things properly and in a timely fashion, you should refer her for disciplinary action. You have access to your pharmacy records to prove what and how much she is prescribing and if she can’t duplicate those records she should most certainly be spanked.
