I found Lamictal to be ineffective to prevent my manic reaction to medication (discontinuation rebound mania). I don't think it is a good drug to treat acute mania either. However, it is considered effective to treat rapid-cyclicity. I don't know how long it takes to penetrate the cycle, though. With rapid cyclicity, you often don't see immediate results with mood stabilizer treatment. As an aside, there was some interest several years ago in using high doses of thyroxine to treat rapid cycling bipolar disorder.
