dosages of antidepressants vary wildly. WIth the tricyclics and MAOIS, the ceiling for dosages was largely due to side effects: you can't ramp up dosages too much if higher end dosages cause cardiovascular problems or intense sedation. But since the newer ADs are more tolerable, you can ramp it up more...
Anyway, if your dose is too much for you, you could experience euphoria, or psychosis, or (hypo)mania or EPS, or akathisia...while antidepressants are helpful, there's a lot that can go wrong, too, so its probably not the best idea to go straight from 40 to 80, especially since Prozac's super long half life will mean any side effects could be with you for a long, long time.
Have you considered adding something? Nobody likes a cocktail, but adding in any number of things--a tricyclic, a mood stabilizer, a stimulant, a neuroleptic, a benzo, lithium, wellbutrin, buspar--could be helpful and might make it easier to get what it is you need out of treatment. Just a thought--obviously, your own doc will know best.
In the meantime...maybe you could see a counselor/therapist?
GOod luck!
