In reply to Lithium + Water Pills, posted by prodgirl on July 2, 2006, at 22:40:09
I had this, plus a terrible long-lasting muscle pain (myalgia) especially in my calves, ankles, and various joints too. It was a case of minor swelling and major pain, and frankly I am ashamed I didn't force the issue with my GPs and pdoc and do something like a med change earlier. But I can't be sure I didn't worsen my lithium situation, because I was on it for a couple of years without the severe myalgia before it became a long-lasting, life-quality reducing matter. And I regularly used both natural and OTC diuretics to get rid of excess water. Also since I was in pain a lot, I took ibuprofen, which doesn't really go well with lithium. So although I did drink lots of water, maybe I still helped cause and reinforce a lithium intolerance thing.
My advice is seriously see your docs about it, and that even though water pills can occasionally be used with lithium, only under strict medical supervision. Toxicity can result and it is very dangerous. It happened to me, and I actually liked the lithium effect on my moods.
But I ended up feeling sick and with something tiring and hurtful like fibromyalgia--my muscles throbbed with tender pain without even touching them. Hope this helps! ramsea
