Usually, that sort of a pattern is actually a placebo effect. That doesn't mean it's not real, just that it's not from the drugs per se. There really aren't a lot of drugs out there that take effect that fast, though. Most require four to six weeks minimum to start to work.

Anyone had similar experiences or suggestions? The drugs you mentioned are all different sorts of things: Tofranil (imipramine) is a tricyclic antidepressant; Provigil (modafinil) is a "wakefullness agent"; and St John's Wort is a dietary supplement. I won't mention the SJW, because that belongs on the Alternative board, but regarding the others, here are a few ideas...
The tricyclics can be excellent drugs, and one benefit they have is that they're cheap now, generic. But there are a number of other classes of antidepressants, as well as a number of other TCAs to try. The SSRIs are very effective for a lot of people, for instance. And although they're not first line choices, the MAOIs.
What sorts of symptoms are you hoping to address? (For instance, for some people depression might mean agitation, active distress, anxiety; for others, complete amotivation and anhedonia.) And what sorts of side effects -- if any -- did you have with those drugs? How long were you taking them? At what sorts of doses?
Which drug to try is more art than science, and my best advice -- I firmly believe it's the best advice you can get -- is to find a good psychopharmacologist to help you find the right solution for you.
Good luck, and welcome to Babble.
