Hi Philippa,
I think both psychotic depression ( which you can have at the same time as mania-its called a mixed state) and mania share stuff with schizophrenia. A bad case of bipolar and a mild case of schizo probably aren't that far apart. There is actually a disorder in between called schizoaffective disorder and I know the definition of it but can't think of it right now due to not having had the morning coffee yet... I noticed it sounded like that when I was writing it but didnt know if anybody else would notice...those are some of my symptoms and/or those I've observed others to have :-).
