In another post, you said you tapered off Xanax before, what makes you think you couldn't do it again, if necessary? For whatever it is worth, supposedly it is harder to taper off daily doses of Xanax of more than 4 mg- a vote not to do it except under doc-supervised, exceptional conditions.
Don't let the "Xanax is poison" comments upset you. I've abruptly stopped Paxil at 50 mg twice and Lexapro at 20 mg twice and had absolutely no withdrawal-but imagine if I was one of those many people that have had the horrible withdrawal experiences that last months! I'd definately say, "watch out for Paxil and Lexapro!". Look at the withdrawal board on this site-lots of benzo problems? No, lots of AD withdrawal problems. Being respectful of any med just makes sense, as does using the least amount that makes you feel functional-but Xanax is an exceptionally effective med (look up the rating on Remedyfind.com). My suggestions would be to use the smallest amount possible and to be sure that you are O.K. with the idea that some day you may have to taper it down, and that may or may not be a problem. Klonopin and Valium are much, much easier to withdraw from, at least in my experience, so if they work as well, they are worth switching to. The other thing to consider is whether you have a reliable supply of Xanax-if you do taper off, you'll want to take a few months, if you are like most people. Best of luck, and try not to let worrying about your meds make you even more anxious.
