My experience was getting one diagnosis after another from my psychiatrist. I thought this was necessary for insurance coding and prescribing medication. Yet, if this is the case, I would have prefered not knowing what they were. I was only interested in improving functioning, not all the labels of dysfunction.
I had tests with a psychologist which lasted a combined 4 hours over 2 days. The results were that I was totally normal, with 'totally' underlined twice, LOL. The neuro/psychiatrist made decisions based on the test results which had gross deviations from an otherwise mean above average.
Knowing the functions that are deviating gives me something specific. I know that neuro/psych tests can magnify weaknesses but I appreciated the data results more than the 'totally normal' statement. I appreciate the improvement from medication more than knowing the labels they are for.
