This is true. Also, a lot happens to your brain chemistry during deep sleep (not REM).

Unfortunately, some brains are dysregulated in such a way as to be resistant to a psychotherapeutic approach. My thoughts on this matter are a bit more sophisticated than that, but that's the gist of it. Brain imaging seems to coroborate this notion.
