I dunno about bupe in particular, never having taken it. But opiates always helped my depression, amazingly, of course. A revelation to begin with etc etc. Longer term effects (especially with methadone) were not so encouraging. I'm not saying that opiates poop out. Eventually the sort of disinhibiting effect where you talk to people spontaneously in the street becomes completely a thing of the past. But anyway, that's decades of use for you, and that probably is why most people who take them eventually stop.
