I agree with you Scott. It doesn't have to be the result of a trauma (although depression is traumatic). I get it when my depression is at its worst. I also get auditory hallucinations as well.

However, once set into motion, these feelings can last for many years. In addition, having had these feelings in the past can act as a backdrop for "re-experiences" or "flash-backs" in the future. Anhedonia coupled with anxiety might foster depersonalization and derealization in the setting of a biological affective disorder.
