> Hi there!
> First of all, don't worry. You need to be informed, but you don't need to be frightened.
> I'm not sure that your doctor will put you on valium. There are lots of meds that can help you calm down, and each is particularly effective in certain circumstances. It sounds like your doctor is looking for the specific drug to help you given your unique circumstances.
> So... what is valium, and what are the other drugs, etc. Valium is a drug in a class of drugs called benzodiazepenes. These are used to treat anxiety, as a sededave, and for other uses.
> I was on alprazolam (zanax) for quite a while. It didn't turn me into a zombi. Sometimes my co-workers would notice that I would start talking really fast, or I couldn't settle down, they would remind me to "take a pill"
> Now for the portion to keep this thread on the substance use page.
> These drugs can be habit forming, especially when not taken as prescribed. It is dangerous to mix these drugs with alcohol. For some people who have substance abuse problems, doctors will avoid prescribing this class of drugs because of the potential for abuse.
> If you have a problem with over-use of substances, make sure that your doc knows about this before he prescribes something to you.
> With all of that being said, there has only been one known case of someone actually dying from valium, and that person had mixed it with alcohol. Her name was Karen Ann Quinlan, and that happened in 1976. These are very safe drugs.
> As far as side effects, they can include drowsiness, nervousness, etc. but as I said, I didn't personally experience those symptoms.
> You can do some research on your own. Go to the drug companies and check out their literature. Here is a good site on Valium. There are others on the other benzodiazepenes too.

5mgs 2-3x daily (short term) may be very beneficial to a Benzo naive person, experiencing excessive anxiety.
