All of the neurotransmitters are intricately linked in ways that no one can really explain with current science. But, from what you describe, it sounds like dopamine might be a major player, with norepinephrine, serotonin, and gaba as secondary players.

The beer causes a rush of dopamine. Xanax is a unique benzo in that at low doses it also stimulates dopamine, whereas the others or higher doses squash out the dopamine. The SSRIs and AEDs are probably squashing out the dopamine and that could be why they didn't help you much.

Med choices are endless, and predictions don't often work. Some medications that work primarily on serotonin also have significant dopamine enhancing effects, such as prozac or cymbalta or zyprexa or a combination. Zyprexa also has some affinity for gaba.

On the natural side, St Johns Wort fits...reuptake inhibition of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and GABA...anti-anxiety and antidepressant. Amino acids tyrosine, dl-phenylalanine, and calming ones like gaba+glycine+taurine combos at the health food store. Easy to experiment with and only a few days trial is needed with each to see.

But in the end, all medications are much more complex than anyone knows, so it is very hard to make any predictions. I saw a science show on TV a while ago that showed how beer works on the brain, and the primary thing that first happens with it is a flood of dopamine, which is later negated by the sedation.
