I think I've mainly heard that Wellbutrin doesn't do much to help social anxiety, and often times people say that it increases their generalized anxiety dramatically.
I've had a different experience though. I have social anxiety and take Wellbutrin SR to augment my Paxil. I really like it. Even when I took the Wellbutrin alone for a period of time, I found that it really got rid of any depression I had from the social anxiety, and most importantly, it makes me motivated to go out and do things. Paxil is notorious for causing people with social anxiety to not have the desire to go out around people even though they aren't afraid to anymore. I find that Wellbutrin really does motivate me to get out in society.
Of course, everyone is different so you may have a positive or negative experience with it. I would say trying Wellbutrin would at least be worth a try. Also, I didn't experience any horrible withdrawal symptoms when I went off of it for a couple of months.
