In reply to meds for psychotic depression please please read, posted by chand2407 on November 8, 2005, at 23:48:15
Have you ever tried lithium or Depakote in the past?
Its great you are working to figure this out.
Also how about exercising 3 x per week? One study showed regular exercise was just as effective as medication at treating depression. It was equally effective to the antidepressant they compared it to, at 12 weeks. Meaning just as good. Also means adding exercise to medication might have an additive effect. They've also shown exercise increases growth factors in the brain, encouraging brand new neurons to grow.
I agree with whoever posted about the fish oil or fatty acids....studies also find a good effect of it.
Both of the above can take some time to work, but worth it to do as much as possible naturally to avoid too many medications.
What were your first symptoms? Were you depressed first, followed by the thoughts being problematic? Did it start within the first year of your child being born or ?
Are you worse in the fall and winter? (If so add vitamin D and get a lightbox (10,000 lux).)
How about other health problems? Have you had hormones levels checked ?(TSH and thyroid antibodies, and FSH, and 24 hour cortisol would be a good start).
