Hi IFMP,
>MAOIs?
Phenelzine (Nardil) and tranylcypromine (Parnate) are the most well-established MAOI anti-depressants.
>what do they actually do?
Nardil.......
1. Elevates mood
2. Restores interest in life in general
3. Reduces anxiety, especially in social situations
4. Inhibits rejection sensitivity
5. Decreases the tendency to oversleepParnate........
1. Elevates mood
2. Enhances motivation
3. Decreases the tendency to oversleepIn the treatment of atypical depression, MAOIs are the 'gold standard'.
Selegiline's efficacy as an antidepressant is much less consistent. It should not be considered to be a replacement for the classical MAOIs.
Kind regards
